Wanted to try this since I saw it in Berry's Tiki+ app.
Just picked up a dozen white grapefruits at Kroger, so...

Mai Tai Swizzle
Sub'd the Cuban rum with Appleton and the Cointreau with Patron Citronge

Tasty. Kind of a Mai Tai, Jet Pilot mash up.

Mmmmmmm Mai Tai Swizzles and Ancient Mariners. Sounds fantastic all around!!!

My friends at my local watering hole made me a batch of Scorpions. It would be rude for me to say no, right?

(Next on the agenda, help the Big Orange purchase some Scorpion Bowls)

Really? No happy hour checkins since June?

Sometimes you just want an original Mai Tai

Who's coming over with pizza and beer? Or a pu pu platter and mai tais?

We can watch Cars 2 and I will be asleep by 8:30.

This thread needed a bump - nice work!

I should use up some limes, but beer and pizza sounds too good to pass up. Plus, I have Tikitwang's cocktails to look forward to tomorrow. :D

and looking for a recipe to use the cool vintage coupes I found thrifting today. Very nice B cups, with a fine silver rim and an etched vine.

I'll have it figured out in time for Java's show on WEFT.org at 11pm EDT.

I bet a Corpse Reviver #2 would be quite tasty in those new glasses.

I got a new Black Sabbath "Paranoid" album in the mail yesterday afternoon as part of my "Vinyl Me Please" album of the month club. I never know what I am going to get and so a re-release of Black Sabbath was very surprising and it really set the mood for yesterday's happy hour. I didn't try the recipe that came with it, I had a diabalo.

The drink recipe that was paired with the album is the "Black Jack" - "chosen to match both the hue and style of the album....something black and heavy, but full of electricity."

1 1/2 oz cognac
1/2 oz kirschwasser
1/2 oz cold coffee concentrate
1/4 oz demerara syrup

shake with ice and strain in to a chilled cocktail coupe. Garnish with three brandied cherries on a pick (the PDT Cocktail Book)

I love that they always seem to ship it such that it corresponds with Friday happy hour!

So, Happy Hour is well on its way. I decided to try something new so, borrowing from Casino Royale I decided to make a Vesper

3 parts Gordons Gin
1 part Vodka
1/2 part Kina Lillet Blonde

Put into a shaker with cube ice, shake until very cold (the metal shaker should frost) then strain into a Martini glass. Squeeze a lemon peel over it, then drop into the drink.

As Bond said "I never have more than one drink before dinner. But I do like that one to be large and very strong and very cold and very well-made."

Cheers!

Played around with Gin a bit recently as we got a new couch and we're being a bit cautious with it. Came up with a cocktail our facebook friends named the new sofa:

.5 oz Domain de Canton
.5 oz Benedictine
.5 oz Orgeat
.5 oz Lemon Juice
4 oz Gin (Saint Augustine to be specific)

That's enough for two.

Recently wanted something less sweet and tart and went with:

.5 oz Domain de Canton
.5 oz Cointreau
2 oz Gin (Saint Augustine to be specific)

And kinda liked it better.

Both sound good Don. Do you serve the shaken and strained or over rocks?

Stirred and strained into a chilled cocktail glass.

I am a big fan of the Vesper. According to those who have spent too much time nerding out on this cocktail (ahem) the taste has changed...apparently the Lillet we have today is not really the same as it was back in the day.

I like Lillet a lot - but in olden times it had a quinquina flavor that is not there today (Lillet has even dropped the "kina" from the name referenced in the original recipe above)

If you like that bitterish flavor in your drinks (think gin & tonic), try using Cocchi Americano instead of Lillet to make the drink closer in flavor to the original.

holy crap I spend way too much time thinking about this stuff.

No you don't, you spend and admirable amount of time thinking about this stuff.

And Mahalo for the info. I did not know the taste had changed though I noticed the label was different. I will have to pick up a bottle of Cocci Americano and give it a try (as long as its available locally).
