Some of you know about my recent layoff which pretty much sucked and put me in a bit of a funk. A few days of job searching only added to the gloom.
As an aside, my wife is going to school to become a teacher for special needs children. She has just been told she was picked to be an MPS intern this upcoming school year with full teacher salary and benefits. This will be a huge financial boon for us. She still has to wait for an opening, but we don't think that will be much of an issue before the fall.
So, on to my point.

The wahine and I have decided that , assuming I don't get called back to work at my last job, that I will stay home with the kids this summer so we don't have to pay for daycare. I'll keep looking for work, of course, but I'm looking at the fall again for going back full time. So, in between donating plasma, I will be carving as much as I can possibly take to try and make some cash. We will be dirt poor for the time being, but I'll be happy as pie!

Today begins the grand experiment and here is my first victim,
A 5'6" palm log I drug up here from Florida.

I hope you all don't mind progress pics, but I like to post them as a personal motivator.
Of course if anybody wants something made, any size or style, just let me know!

Mahalo! :fez:

I'm pretty sure most of us look forward to seeing your progress pics. Your work is awesome. On another note, if they ever get around to making Johnny Dollar: The Movie, I see some stunt double work in it for yah.

Thanks everyone, I'll post pics as they come. :D

It's a beautiful carving day. Lower sixties, lot's o' sun, The Brewers are at the top of the division and are already beating the Cards 2-0 in the first inning. Fun!

A face emerges...
Image
It's very, very rough yet.
I also discovered that there is a huge hollow section that runs the whole length of the log.
I'm just suprized because the wood is still fairly moist and I didn't expect that to happen.
Hopefully I can work around it.

But the Brewers won again!

Moai are deceptively tricky to carve (or so I'm finding out!)

Still pretty rough.

Thanks guys!
It's a warm one today. It's nice to carve tropical for a change. :D

I gotta still work on that chin. It's way to flat.

Do to the close proximity of neighbors (nieghbors? Weird/wierd?) I'm not using any powertools. It's all chisel and I feel like it's taking forever!
