Hey all! I hope to post some reviews of my collection here soon and invite all a' yous to do the same! This'll also be a good place to discuss favorite Exotica LPs and related stuff as well!

Anyone heard of this one?:

Title: "The Sounds of EXOTIC ISLAND"

Artist: The Surfmen

Tracks:
A:
Quiet Village
Tahiti Sunrise
Bali Hai
Bamboo
Jungle Romance
Forbidden Island
B:
Taboo
Moonlight in Paradise
Luau
Orchid Lagoon
Fire Goddess
Moon of Manakoora

I almost didn't pick this up because of the sub-par sleeve art  but I'm glad I did! I'm stuck on side B right now because of the kick-ass version of Fire Goddess.

Overall this is a fun take on Exotica with some interesting instrumentation. Before hearing this album, I was curious to hear flute used in Exotica. This version of "Quiet Village" makes great use of the flute, meeting if not exceeding my expectations. The style doesn't honor the minimalism heard in Denny's or Lyman's arrangement of this staple which sets the tone for the rest of the album, and makes the Surfmen a unique addition to a collection containing Denny and Lyman standards. "Fire Goddess" stands out as a departure from this style being being more simplistic and haunting than the other tracks.

While up in Piqua last night, I picked up Les Baxter's Jewels of the Sea: Titillating Orchestrations for Listening and Loving.
It actually has one scratch that is rather annoying on the first track, but so far, so good. The vinyl looks as if it has never seen a needle, otherwise.
I usually listen to Baxter on the 2 -disk cd set I have, but always like picking up the vinyl whenever I see it.

At Half Price Books by the Dayton mall over the weekend, I picked up Hawaiian Wedding Song by the Sammy Laului Orchestra for a mere .25 cents and it was great!

Now...this is between us - don't tell my wife, but I broke down and picked up the only copy I've ever seen of the 3 cd set Hawaiian Favourites by Goldies (2002) at FYE at the Dayton Mall. I saw it over the weekend, but did not have the $23.99 to blow on it at the time.
Well, the more I thought about it, the more I knew I should have bought it - hell it has two tikis on the cover - who can resist?!
So I went back the other day and got it, using my charge card... (Hey, I'm due for a windfall - I'll pay it off!)
Hawaiian Favourites (thats how it's spelled on the cover...) is a 3 disk set with 14 tracks on each disk that includes Hawaiian staples of cultured tunes. Some are really old and scratchie - sounds like they could've cleaned it up a bit. Soem have a Hawaiian Big band sound, but all are great!
Artists like Lani McIntires Hawaiians, Alfred Apaka, King Nawahi's Hawaiians, Harry Owens His Royal Hawaiian Hotel Orchestra, Pau Almedia & Randy Oness'...many others.
A pricey little collection, but I figured if I didn't cease the opportunity to buy it now, chances are, I never would.

Stingray, I may have to send you some blanks to burn! Hey maybe we should start a trading music thread. You would send CD-R's along with a return envelope to the person. What do you all think?

Some stuff I have:
1. Dick Dale Tribal- Thunder and Unknown Territory
2. The King Dexter All-Stars- Greatest Hits
3. The Silencers- Total Energy
4.The Tiki Tones-Suburban Savage
5. The Ultra Lounge Sampler

I'd be down for that - I have a pretty decent surf & ska collection, some old, some new.

Eh, keep in mind that so long as you only put up a few at a time, music files can be shared via the Gallery.

Granted, this means nothing to the Moai Ra'e as they do not have access to uploading until they are Fellows, but they can download.

You just put in the location of the sound file as if it were a photo. Maybe we can all upload four tracks each at any one time (that way we save on bandwidth). You could upload four at once, leave 'em up for a awhile, then upload four more to replace them and delete the old ones. Saves the mailing hassle.

Hmmmm?

Check it out, here's some music I uploaded. Oh, and most times it will spawn the player right in your browser, so you can listen to it right there or open up a seperate browsing page and let it play in the background while ya surf. Video works too.

Sounds like a steal to me! You'll have to check out some of my vinyls!

Hey Cannibal, I've been meaning to pick up a Dick Dale album all Summer. The one you speak of sounds perfect! Shoot me a PM with more info!

Okay guys, here's the deal...

I made it so that each member that wants to share music can have his/her own album for music files. You must contact me to create that album, but once that is done, you can upload yer stuff right into it without my help. The only catch is, in order to make the albums work this way, you all will have the ability to upload music to each others albums. So that means that you gotta be sure when you place that file that you place it in your album only. I don't want to see people just dumping songs any old place.

Also, this applies to the HRHH album too. If you took pics and are signed up for the Gallery, you can upload those pics right into the HRHH album. So please take advantage of this if you snapped any pics at all at the event.

If this works out, I may allow access to all albums so that members can just upload directly in all cases.

Lastly, when you want to upload pics and have a special album in mind that does not exist, let me know and I will create that album for you and make it Fellow access so that you upload into it yourself. Saves me the trouble of moving them around afterward.

Cool?

Just go over to the Gallery page and register like you did here. Once it goes through I'll activate your access, create a music album for you (with your choice of title) and then you can start uploading tunes.

It's really easy. Start us off with four tracks and then if we don't get more response from members soon I'll up all participating Moai's track allowance to ten or so.

Nothing. You are all set. From your registration on it is all my job as admin.

So... I got you all set. If you go there now and log in you will have upload access and all the perks. I also went a head and made you a music folder to upload to. If you want me to name it something in particuar just let me know. Right now it is called Kid Mongo's Mondo Stereo I think.

Have fun!

Click the "upload file" button once you are signed in and it should prompt you to an uploads page. Then you just click the browse button next to each of the file slots and find the file on your 'puter. Next click "continue", and it will do the rest. When it is done it will ask you place the files in an album. You should choose your music album.

Make sure that you create and album for yourself to upload pictures to as well.

Such an idiot. I was able to do that, but one of my files ("Voyage to Tiki Island") were sent to Cannibal's folder.
