Will this week never end?! I'm not sure yet what we'll be drinking tonight (I'm sure CaptainQuad will ring in later with the answer to that one), but I'm planning for it to be big enough to swim in!

got out early so it is time to mix.
a while ago i asked about 10 cane and think i have perfected a drink as dry and bitter as my humor!
i will call it the golden flog (unless someone tells me that name is taken)

(beachbum purists beware i mix barbancourt 15!)

Stir together the following
1/2 oz. coco lopez
1/2 oz. big rock candy syrup
1.5 oz. barbancourt 15 year
1.5 oz. 10 cane
juice of one large lime

pour into a mug filled with shaved ice!
garnish with fancy flag (i make a top-knot like power dome for my tiki mugs out of juiced lime half and cherry)
(simple... the way i like it and complements both of the rums very well(esp. barbancourt) and dare i say emphasizes their flavors...)

in a related story someone figured i had lots of bad old fashioneds. it had been a no (even at the crummiest dive) until i went to boston and ordered one at the Union oyster house. It was in the financial district and boasted the title of america's oldest bar... naturally i asked for a black stripe (an ancient colonial drink made with rum, molasses, and hot water)...when the bartender said "red stripe" i repeated myself... but the look i got suggested i change my order. at first I looked for a bottle of applejack, but no luck there either... so it was on to the old stand-by old fashioned.

the bartender at this upscale place made it by muddling a cherry and about a 1/2 oz. of bitters (no orange!) in a brandy snifter. he then poured in a packet of sugar then dumped this mix into a double rocks filled with ice. finally he dumped a large amount of beam on top.

and that is the story of my first terrible old fashioned.

Interesting... no orange but a cherry? Both the cherry and the orange got added later to the drink so I could see someone just muddling water, sugar, bitters and lemon peel with neither but adding the cherry only is pointless.

And a 1/2 ounce of bitters? Wow. I hope the story ended with the drink being sent back.

Make me one, too! Although bitching behind closed doors for 2 hours has helped pass the time.

This one made me nervous, but turned out to be really good!

Trader Jeff was telling me about this beer at one of our meet n' greets. It's even cooler than I imagined.

I was actually thinking of starting cocktail sized then movin' on up. Maybe a Sazerac, might be Martini time.

Didn't find anything exciting for cocktail o' the week online, might have to whip out the chem lab.

I started with a single (Voyager) then moved to a double (a Miehana the size of my head). Ahhh... happy hour.

Heh! Yesterday's happy hour is just nostalgia at this point, but I resurrected an old favorite cocktail that I can highly recommend. It's called a Mandarin Crush and I learned it from Audrey, now of the Pegu Club.

Muddle a lemon with 1 1/2 oz. simple syrup in a double old fashioned glass
Pack glass with crushed ice
Fill glass to within a fat 1/8 of an inch with Absolut Mandarin
Top off with soda water or the like

Then I moved on to a Corn and Oil.

Hey. there's always tonight again!

Cheers!

Jack

My mom drove out from Connecticut this weekend for my step-daughter's high school graduation. Mom brought along some Wray & Nephew Pimento Liquor from her recent cruise stop in Jamaica, along with several bottles of Lemon Hart that Bargoyle kindly ordered for me at his favorite "packie." (Thanks, Bro!)

Thanks to my rum-runnin' mom, we kicked off the weekend celebration with Ancient Mariners. :D

We've been perfecting punches around here this week, in anticipation of summer entertaining. I've been experimenting with Trader Vic's Midnight Punch, from the Bartenders Guide. It's good, but the addition of a little lime juice made it excellent.

Drop by sometime and we'll mix up a few.

Last night in preparation for Hukilau, we made '34 Zombies and watched "Where the Boys Are." It's set in Fort Lauderdale and features the mermaid show at the Wreck Bar!

Well, not to be an ass, but last night we went to see the mermaid show at the Wreck Bar! We've actually got out of town guests who aren't tikiphiles who picked this weekend to visit. Can't wait to meet so many of you in person!
