It's just around the corner and I could definitely use a cocktail. So, what will we be drinking tonight across FOMnation?

The bitters thread got me thinking about a proper martini with orange bitters, but currently I've only got blood orange bitters. I might try that anyway. However, I did some cleaning out my rss feeds recently and saved this older post from Loki for the Honolulu Cocktail: http://modernhobbit.blogspot.com/2008/01/honolulu-cocktail.html, Gin, Benedictine, Marascino and bitters, a nice twist from where I started out. Follow the link for a picture and the recipe (It's always nice to get a little blog traffic).

Of course thinking of Loki and Bitters reminds me that I haven't cracked open my Peychaud's bitters that Loki gave me as part of a fine birthday present, so maybe between here and home I'll have a change of heart, (er taste) and go for a Sazerac.

Decisions, Decisions...

So what are you drinking tonight?

Beer and Johnny Walker Red.

And a lot of it. I need it after this week.

Sadly, due to lack of funds, I cannot partake in bitters and cocktails but I do have a stash of tasty beverage at home to play with. Will it be wine, cider ale, or framboise?

Friday night happy hour is a sacred tradition here at the Lounge. I'm choosing between a few to start off with, including one that CaptainQuad came up with last night in tribute to the passing of Ben Chapman, who played the Gill Man on land in the "Creature from the Black Lagoon" and "Revenge of the Creature": cachaca, lime juice, a dash of Midori and a dash of Angostura bitters. I'm not sure he's named it yet. I haven't yet decided what to serve for hors d'oeuvres, though, so that will affect cocktail choices.

Good thread....and happy B-days to you and LuRu!

Thinking about a very dry plymouth gin martini with a twist for openers. Also thinking Manhattan, but that is probably too heavy to open with.

Then a mai tai after I get a haircut. Thinking about a blend of El Dorado 15 and Mt Gay for the rum in that. I'm pretty sure about the El Dorado, but still thinking about the Jamaican rum to use.

Then some dinner - don't know what yet, but that will indicate the right drink(s).

Then later off to Milk & Honey. Never been there before, but it's supposed to kick ass. May try one or more of the M&H drinks in the Bitterman thread (thanks FOM), then again may ask them for a mai tai if they can do it. They don't have a drink menu but apparently make drinks on request or using a requested base spirit. Looking forward to this.

Take care all.

I didn't know he had passed on. That makes me very sad.

Here's info from his site.

Ben Chapman passed away at 12:15 am Hawaii time on Thursday, February 21 at the VA hospital in Honolulu. His health began to deteriorate February 12 and he was admitted to the hospital on February 20. His life support was turned off Wednesday around noon and his pacemaker was turned off shortly before he died. He died peacefully with his wife, Merrilee, and son, Ben Chapman III, by his side. He was 79 years old at his death.

Aw man! Damn!

I didn't hear about this... my favorite monster of all time... we have the Black Lagoon forum thanks to those films.

Godspeed Ben Chapman. RIP

Around the corner no more, it's here! I walked in the front door, pet then fed the cat, placed two cocktail glasses in the freezer, depantsed, lavalavaed, and set about making the Honolulu cocktail. If you followed the link to Loki's blog, you've seen that he felt it was too sweet and he added bitters. I thought it was still too sweet, so I added more gin. I ended up tripling the gin and now it's mighty fine. Now I better get some food going.

Joe, as a Manhattan guy, what do you think of the Sazerac?

Cheers!

I got to meet him once and he was really nice and so gratified that so many people cared about him. It's a shame. :(

The Sazerac is a mighty fine drink - I had one at a local bar we discovered while not in Memphis last weekend. I prefer it with rye, and not to heavy on the herbsaint please (or the lucid abisinthe like I had).

Over the past 6 months or so I have come to really like all things burbon (or rye as called for) - manhattans, old fashioneds, mint julips, suffering bastards, and most best - neat.

Yes, I am right on schedule, sipping my dry plymouth martini...now what to have for dinner?

We got home to find a bill for about $3,000 from the IRS waiting in the mailbox.

The good news is, we don't actually owe that much... in fact the treasury may owe us money.

The bad news is we messed up our 2006 tax return and now we get to file all the documents to correct that.

So.... once we figured that out I put a Waitiki mix on and busted out some Navy Grog:

1 oz light rum
1 oz Jamaican dark rum
1 oz Demerara rum
3/4 oz simple syrup
3/4 oz lime juice
3/4 grapefruit juice

In honor of this special day I used Wood's Old Navy 114 proof Demerara rum.

Then I may invent a new drink called the "Schedule D."

The Schedule D

2 oz Thunderbird wine (what? you think you can afford better after the IRS is through with you?)
1 oz water (because it is available what with the water bill being paid.. for now)
1 oz top shelf gin (hey, we want you to buy some luxury items so we can tax you again! hahahahahaha!)
1 squeeze of a lemon segment you saved off of your iced tea at Chotchkie's.

Swirl in whatever you have on hand... maybe a rinsed out peanut butter jar.

Drink in one gulp as you contemplate jail time for tax evasion.

Hmmm.... not bad. We were considering.

* pour contents of nearest bottle into glass
* drink

Ice optional.

I viewed the glass as an unnecessary indulgence.

The wife and I did one Singapore Sling and one Halekulani Cocktail tonight, from the Grog Log and Sippin' Safari, respectively. Try the Halekaluni if you haven't... mighty tasty!

 on the "Shedule D". Sorry to hear of your misfortune.

It's Margaritas again. I don't know what's come over me... since the holidays I've been on a Tequila kick. Tomorrow I may have to hit up the healthfood store for some agave nectar... anybody heard of this stuff?

Our Schedule C is looking painfully bare. :(

-Sit 6 pack next to computer.
-Drink and fight with form.
-Lather, rinse, repeat.
