I know there are lots of Disney fans in the FOM. I would like to hear your thoughts and reviews of the American Experience 4 hour biography of Walt Disney. What did you like, dislike, things they skipped over and should have covered, things they spent too much time on, the commentators and interviews?

Where does one view it? Available for online streaming or PBS or ??

I tuned in halfway through the second night, just as they turned to the planning and building of Disneyland.

There was a lot of cool archival footage, as well as interviews with Disney Imagineers like Rolly Crump. I had seen some of the old film before, but the behind-the-scenes insights were outstanding.

I think its incredible. The footage is fantastic! I almost feel like this is required viewing before going to the Disney Family Museum.

The wife and I watched this just before we left on our trip to California including two days at Disneyland. The documentary was great, I didn't realize just how bad Walt was with labor relations. Also my wife now refers to herself as the Roy to my Walt.

I have it recorded on the DVR, along with a documentary about the 1964 World's Fair, which was pretty much a Disney production.

Looking forward to watching.

Does Walt Die? Does the park ever open? Nevermind, don't tell me how it ends.

The documentary was an interesting take on the life of Walt Disney. The best parts of the documentary was some of the images and film clips used in the film. The worst part was the psychological guess and conjecture to the reason Walt did certain things. I felt the "talking heads" had a definite agenda to in regards to Walt and his motivations. It felt as if they were painting him as a tortured soul with definite biases and prejudices. Also there was too large of a focus on both the strike and Walt's testimony for the House of Un-American Activities Committee. Also there was no discussion of Walt's involvement in the 1964 World's Fair. To cover his life would have taken 25 hours to fully cover. There is so much more positive things that Walt did and spearheaded. A long discussion of the creation of audio-animatronics should have been included.

Overall it is an okay introduction to Walt and some of his achievements. There are some other films, but the best introduction is Bob Thomas' biography and Michael Barrier's biography. Also the Diane Disney Miller biography is a good time period look at Walt.

I questioned the psychological conjecture as well, but enjoyed it overall. I look forward to discussing it more over a cocktail!
