Very sad... it might be possible to save some artifacts but in a place so remote a lot will be lost to erosion.

As for the societal collapse, the whole deforestation theory has been pretty blown up by more recent research.

yeah, it is very sad.

when you combine the elements affecting the island, the soft sandy stone the moai are made of, the increasing traffic from cruise ships that bus people around the joint by the dozens multiple times per week and the fact that the moai are largely unprotected and remote, our tour guide estimated that they would pretty much be gone in about 40 years.

that was almost 10 years ago.

I think they may have put up some barriers or fences to provide some protection for the moai, but I am not sure how effective they are.
