Howdy, everyone!

I'm not entirely sure what all to put in an introduction here, but I live just outside of Atlanta in Stone Mountain. Everyone in my household is a lover of tiki culture, which I consider to be one of my wife's great gifts to me.

Anyway, we had a Hurricane Irma refugee with us on Sunday, and we decided to cheer him up at the Victory / SOS luau in Decatur, GA, when we saw some FOM there. They passed the website along to us. Suffice it to say, all of us are signing up because we love the idea of being part of a group of people who put their tropical bliss to a good cause. Also, because we love a good fez.

When I'm not slinging navy grog or working my day job for Cisco, I'm playing with ham radio equipment, hacking on some new project, making booze in the workshop, or out for a round of disc golf.

Mahalo, and I'd love to know how to get more involved with my local chapter and work towards membership.

Welcome, Roadriverrail !

I'm up here in Marietta--not too far away from you at all. :) This region is a REALLY good place to be, for finding tropical-based fun.

Glad to hear you made it to the luau. I hope to have a chance to meet you at the next event.

I saw you mention these to Puck and the Prof, too. Can you give some more details on them?

I have been working with Trader Vic's organizing seminars about a range of subjects related to Tiki, music, Rum tastings, etc. We are hoping to have one finalized for October soon.

Aloha, I was a Hurricane Irma refugee who was cheered up by the Victory/SOS luau last Sunday. Hope your friend fared well. All the south Florida FOM did very well considering.

Tell us a bit more about ham radio.

Our friend ended up doing just fine for himself. He bugged out to Atlanta because Tampa suddenly became an eyewall strike zone, but his house is going to be just fine and he spent a couple of days camped out with us.

As for the ham radio, hm... Well, it's a hobby both Prof. Babealon and I have shared since 2004 when we got our licenses together. It makes use of parts of the radio spectrum...all the way down below shortwave radio and all the way up to wifi and microwave frequencies...to let people communicate with each other. There's a ton of different interests that fall under that umbrella, but I'll mention my two favorites.

The first thing I really love is what's called DX, which is basically where you see how far you can get your station's signal to go. From our old home in Oakland, CA, I've had some nice conversations with people in Japan, Russia, and even New Zealand, using about as much power as you find in a couple of light bulbs. It's fun and mysterious and has a tinge of romance to it.

The second one is amateur satellite communications, where I take a special antenna out into an open field and talk to people through satellites in orbit...or sometimes the ISS. The Russians on the ISS actually sent me a postcard over the air once when they were celebrating Uri Gagarin's birthday:

It's also a really handy thing to be into when a hurricane hits. Ham radio operators are part of different emergency response services because ham radio communications often uses little or no infrastructure, and when cell towers go down, it's handy to have civilian volunteers who can step up. The Prof and I worked our first two hurricanes as volunteers back in 2004. Tales from that season are good rum drinks material. :D

Hello!

So many people calling Atlanta home makes me incredibly homesick. The fact you are from Stone Mountain is even more exciting to me because I grew up in Lilburn. Hurricane Irma was scary, my brother lives in Norcross and they had a tree fall and break the gate to their apartment complex. Although he had no complaints about not being able to get to the restaurant!

Welcome, welcome, welcome!

Aloha from another Atlanta native!!! I just starting hanging around the Tongariki a number of months ago, but I can already say with confidence they're a great group of people.

And here's a +1 for amateur radio! Let's exchange shack inventories! I have a Wouxun HT... did I mention I'm looking for an Elmer?

Aloha again!

I've got a Yaesu FT-60 as well as a Kenwood D74-A HT. I use them with an Arrow antenna to work the SO-50 satellite and sometimes the ISS. My HF rig is a Flex 6300, which is a very lovely piece of equipment for an HF station. If you ever want to come over and help me set it up, or just come over and hunt satellites or play radio in any other way, let me know!
