Here is something I wrote for Alcohol Professor. An interesting history of classic cocktail adopted by the Tiki World and it's fascinating creator.

Very interesting. Joe was obviously near the top of the list of great characters we all wish we had met.
A former Trader Vic's bartender who guest starred at a couple of my happy hours put it well: "Anyone who has four of my Suffering Bastards will be one".

interestingly, at one of our favourite Chinese restaurants (RIP) back in Baltimore had a selection of exotic cocktails, the best of which was their Suffering Bastard, which was awesome at $4.50 apiece.

i recall at least once or twice when we ordered Suffering Bastards and getting a hairy eyeball from the other diners at nearby tables

Not many places serve hairy eyeballs--you were indeed fortunate to find one!
