Here is a nice article about the Bahi Hut here in my hometown.
http://www.yourobserver.com/article/bahi-hut-sarasota-tiki-tradition

Scott has done an amazing job advocating for the Bahi Hut to stay true and not go Day-Glo.

I have joined his efforts and we have formed a "Steering Committee" with a few other locals that will work with the new owner to try and keep things on track.

More news and an interview with scott for F.O.M. coming soon.

What are their hours on Friday and Sunday? Maybe we should pass through on our way to or from Weeki Wachee?

I've been following that travesty over on Facebook. I'm glad that someone managed to get them to listen to some sort of reason. Hopefully I'll be able to get to Florida at some point. I'll add it to my list of things to do.

Great article. Visited there once while in school at Ringling, many many years ago. I am glad to see that the day glow idea has been shut down.

Current update on Bahi Hut:

Things are looking up ! Yesterday we hung up a cool Witco Shield that Scott loaned the Hut. Scott Spear has made terrific inroads with the new owner who has been receptive to us doing... whatever :fez:

Maybe I should give a bit of context.... Basically the "Mysterious Mr. B", or rather the company he represents, MEB Capital Inc., owns several of the more rundown hotel properties on US-41. He is is not emotionally invested but he does have a soft spot for the Hut and by all counts appears interested in preserving the historical value and keeping things more or less traditional. I actually remember his name coming up several years ago over possible demo of a historical building on a property he owned and he ended up withdrawing his demo req. application and working with the our local Historical society to restore it.

Knowing this has helped me gauge how much effort and participation the "preservation" project warrants and how much "sponsorship" and volunteer hours I will offer.

There are possibly some cool additions on the horizon that I am looking forward to sharing if they come about. We are on the verge of converting this into something truly special. It's still a dive bar and always will be but... that is why we love it. Cautiously optimistic !

Yesterday we hung the shield, repaired some pendent lights, updates some sm. decor items, started peeling of some horrible party store window clings with a heat gun, took an inventory of the existing "art" and threw out some window shades that had dust from 1954. It was kinda gross.

Can't wait to see the new decor when we visit. Bahi Hut was my first tiki bar, though I confess that the way they mix their drinks isn't so much my style.

Still we'd be heartbroken to return to Sarasota and find it gone/modernized.

Not mine either... sadly I just drink beer when I go there because the mixed drinks are so bad. At the moment the staff situation there is pretty bad. There is no manager and the "bartenders" are not... well, there just not. We are working on it and hopefully will have some influence on the situation. We may be able to insert ourselves into the interview process for the next hire/hires.

Things are underway with "Operation Preservation" at the Hut ! below is our press release and ABC Ch. 7 came out yesterday and did an interview with Jeff... I could have done it better ( and I will !). They sent some clueless intern

We are still having the meet the "artist" event tonight but it is not an UNVEILING... since Jeff is nowhere near finished. :|
We are shooting for next Sat. as our finish date and hoping he cooperates. He's... a character and can be... challenging to work with.

October 2017 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Bahi Hut / Golden Host Resort
4675 N Tamiami Trail
Sarasota, FL 34234

Things are happening at the Bahi Hut !

WHO & WHAT- Over the next several months, Sarasota’s Historical 1954 Bahi Hut will be undergoing some exciting updates. The Bahi Hut has commissioned local artist and “Rogue” Tiki Carver Jeff Chouinard of Surf-Soul-Tiki to carve two new Marquesan style Tiki Totems that will be positioned at the Bahi Huts entrance to greet visitors.

Jeff has made many headlines in the Tampa Bay area with his “guerrilla art”. Taking his chainsaw into the urban environment, he began carving tiki’s from still standing dead palms and trees in parks, neighborhoods, vacant lots and roadsides throughout the area. Locals, and even city officials love it. “I think it’s fun!” - Robin Nigh, manager of the city of Tampa’s art programs.

WHEN & WHERE- Starting Tuesday Oct. 24th - 27th Jeff will be carving Tiki Totems on-site at the Golden Host Resort. Most early evenings, patrons will be able to view Jeff in the courtyard, right from their seats in the bar, through the Bahi Huts windows, as he completes the detail work.

Friday, Oct. 27th The Bahi Hut will host a “Meet the Artist” and carving unveiling event from 4:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. where guests can see the carvings progress and ask Jeff about his art, as well as the inspiration and philosophy behind his work.

WHY & HOW - MEB Capital Inc, owners of the Bahi Hut and Golden Host Resort since 2003, have recognized the significant historical, architectural, and local cultural value of the Bahi Hut. In the spirit of preservation, they have formed a steering committee to assist in restorations, art procurement and transformation of the Bahi Hut into a world class tiki bar, while remaining true to its roots. These carvings will be the first in many art installations and improvements.

“We want to keep the vintage charm of the Bahi Hut and It’s historic 1954 mid-century modern bones. Any aesthetic improvements we suggest will be as historically accurate as possible. Personally, I would love to see it added to the National Register of Historic Places.”
Scott Spear - Bahi Hut Steering Committee and Art Curator

“We are excited to have someone of Jeff’s talent carve the first new Tiki’s for the Bahi Hut. Most of the hut’s Tikis have been weather damaged or stolen over the years.
Will Jeff take his chainsaw into Sarasota’s urban environment, as he did in Tampa?
We can only hope!”
Bill Dillard - Bahi Hut Steering Committee

So much to love here. Kudos to those who stepped up to make sure the restoration of this cool piece of tiki history is done lovingly and historically accurate to the time period. I hope everyone who is in the area visits the Bahi Hut in support!

Following this thread with great interest--mahalo! Has anyone suggested that they batch & put a couple of decent tiki drinks on tap? That's worked well for a couple of DC locations with tiki-challenged bartenders.

After 9 p.m. it can get a bit rough... it's a dive bar after all. They want to clean house and start over but they are having a hard time finding bartenders. Some of the late night crowd have gotten aggressive with staff and it is scaring away potential hires. The numbers are down as a result of several years of mis-management. The owners are real estate people who own several properties and are not in the bar industry so it has created a lot of challenges.

I like the idea of batching a lot and will suggest it  We may suggest they take a month or so and close at 12 a.m. to hit the reset button on the late night crowd and then open up again till 2 with a burly doorman for another few months to drive out undesirable elements.

We are giving up on educating the owner on how to run a bar and focusing on getting them to hire the right bar manager. We hope to insert ourselves into the selection process as there track record on hires... not so good.

Boy do I have stories on my adventures here, past and current.... I need to write some of them down soon before they slip away. The HUT is a magnet for crazy...you can't make this stuff up !

They are almost done now !

What a journey this carving project was... seriously.

I approached Jeff to carve these and worked with Scott Spear to get them finished. The project had... "personality conflicts", some misunderstanding of miss-communications, a pinch ( or was it a pound ? ) of stupidity, more than a dash of WTF and was ... a challenge. I was not sure if we would make the news for new tikis or.... MURDER !! anywaze, I was able to keep the peace long enough to get er' dun and...I think that might just be... "Nuff Said".

BUT, we got it done ... and I think they look great !

We still have to stain them and get them in the ground in front of the Hut but the steepest hill has been summited.

That said... The drinks still suck :|

We are working on it :fez:
More Pics and Video I shot of the project ( with some mad drone skills I might add ) on the Huts FB page:
https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=bahi%20hut

That I'm sure you have all shown some love/like :D
