Aloha!

I'm hereby throwing my name in the fez to join these esteemed ranks.

A bit about me:

I'm a musician, bartender, armchair photographer, and writer.

I live in Pittsburgh, where - like many around these shores - I was introduced to Tiki through Lucky - although somewhat through an intermediary. I started learning about tiki drinks primarily through the cocktails. I loved tiki first due to the complexity, balance, and thoughtfulness of classic tiki drinks. At the time, I was working at a farm-to-table "fancy" restaurant with a "Mercy of the Bartender" on the menu. I began to love the idea of sending some serious let's-go-here-and-have-a-fancy-date type folks a flaming drink with one too many (or not nearly enough, depending on your view) garnishes on it. Sort of a boozy reminder to all our patrons that drinking is supposed to be fun. (Sometimes the bow-tied and bespectacled bartender and bar crowd tends to forget this, in my experience.) Aloha in a mug.

Shortly after leaving the service industry I began to work at Maggie's Farm rum distillery. Incidentally, my first shift there was covering for Lucky on his wedding day. A short while later, I was working every week with Mr. Painproof Man, and we basically just geeked out about cocktails, history, and tiki/Polynesian Pop culture in general. A veritable weekly class on the topic.

My mug collection continued to grow with my fascination, and last year I attended my first Ohana. If you were there, you may have seen me running around being Lucky's barback/juicer/stand-in/Jason-to-his-camper (for the kickoff party). I can't wait for this next week.

Lucky has agreed to sponsor me, and I can't wait to meet more of you next week in Lake George! If I don't see you then, I will more than likely be going to the Hula Hop as well.

Cheers, prospective fellows! To Ohana!

I walked right into that. Although, now my interest is piqued. There must be a group of folks out there that exclusively take photos of armchairs, right?

Welcome to the Port. Grab a cocktail, pull up a chair armed or otherwise, and tell us about yourself.

I've known Dublar for quite a while. He's been on several expeditions deep into Kon-Tiki territory. He is definitely our kind of crazy.

Also, a legit mixologist and bartender who's caught the tiki bug in a big way... I didn't know about the armchair thing, but to each his own :fez:

Alright. A bit about myself.

I'm originally from North Dakota - about as far away from tiki (and for a long while, a proper cocktail) - as one can get. I started playing cello when I was four, so the first part of my life was largely dedicated to music in some form. (I studied classical cello in college, although being a proper North Dakotan, drinking was probably my double major. Luckily, being of Belgian descent, I escaped the American light beers of my friends and indulged on a few too many Trappist ales.) In fact, it was that love and knowledge of craft beers that got me into the bartending world after college and sent me happily stumbling down the road towards tiki.

After leaving full-time bartending (I still pick up shifts at a few local haunts), I somehow managed to finagle a content writing job for an online deal website. I'm really not so sure how it happened, and have been ever-more confused as to why they keep promoting me. I'm now the Travel Editor, although sadly, that doesn't actually entail getting to travel many places. I really only get to go to Huntsville, Alabama. (If there are any northern AL folks here, I'll be down there July 4 - 7!)

As far as interests outside of Tiki goes, it runs the gamut from headphones/audio, PCs, Star Wars, Hemingway, disc golf, photography (perhaps now focusing on armchairs), architecture...ahh heck, I could probably list about a million things here - when Lucky and I get together, there's no telling of where our conversations will end up - from sous vide techniques to Star Wars theories - it gets real nerdy.

My favorite cocktail is typically the one I'm drinking when you ask me. My favorite (not-impossible-to-get) rum is probably Plantation Jamaica 2001.

Occasionally I get to hang out with 'Umi'umi in that delightful little town of his. Hopefully around the Hula Hop I'll get back up there to take pictures of his armchairs.

Thanks, and likewise! I can't wait to get up there to visit y'all this year, as well.

edit: almost delivering your stove. The storage place was closed when we rolled in, but I found the most amazing-ist vintage hawaiian shirt at that antique store, so it was worth it. I'll probably be seeing you guys tonight, and the stove shall have a new home!
