The operative prefix being "con".
As in the opposite of "pro".

Or as in, you are being conned if you order that thinking you're getting a Mai Tai.

I've been conned by a lot of concoctions that call themselves "Mai Tai's", especially in the Caribbean and, surprisingly, Hawai'i. Some of the best were in London, Madrid, Tucson, Fort Lauderdale and, of course, the Kapu Cove (aka my bar).

If you want to know where all the bad Mai-Tais come from look no further than the thousands of bartending school videos on YouTube where they give you a half assed summary of the history of the drink from a Google search and then make a cocktail like this.

Every damn day some poor fool walks into a class taught by these guys.

This guy sounds like someone bullshitting an exam he hasn't studied for. "The Mai Tai is a very classic drink..."

So very sad. Even if you look past subbing amaretto for orgeat, and triple sec for orange curaƧao, because most bars lack either proper ingredient, this botched Mai Tai has two pours MORE than what you would need for a classic Mai Tai.

Maybe we ought to keep a list/thread of videos that ARE decent versions of classic Tiki drinks.

......and then there's that moment when you hand someone a proper Mai Tai and they don't like it. "Oh, that's not what a Mai Tai tastes like!!!!"

:x :wtf:

I would as well. It sounds like a lovely drink.........by any other name. I think that's what irritates me most. Not the drinks themselves, as some of them are very tasty. It's the using of the name.
