Hey there FOM,

You folks seem like a really awesome group of people and you seem to dig the tiki vibe! I've been stalking your website for a while now without the courage to login and post a comment, but I've got a burning question and figured now was the time!

I'm a new transplant to Florida (Miami specifically), having recently moved here from California and I'm planning on going to my first Hukilau this summer! Do you have any advice for the first time attendee? Will any of you be there and interested in meeting a new guy?

I'm interested in becoming a member of the FOM and I think the best way to start would be to meet some of you! (And become an active member of the port of the initiate).

Thanks for any help! Hope to meet some of you soon!

Aloha Dr. McTiki!

We have a sizable crew in the Fort Lauderdale area. Hopefully someone will have some advice! I haven't hit Hukilau myself since 2009, but of course the Mai-Kai is always a highlight.

Thanks! The Mai-Kai has been my favorite thing about Florida since I moved here. Looking forward to seeing it full of like-minded tikiophiles.

We do a Tiki Bingo most months at the Mai Kai...Summer is off season dwon here and our plans change a bit... But usually it's Tiki Bingo every month. Plans are in the works right now for July, With the Hukilau events in June, we are not doing our usual Bingo. Some of us will be a Hukilau.. We are always glad to meet new tikiphiles in the area!

That's great! I just recently joined the Mai Kai Club and now I've got a great excuse to get up there and use it!

For sure check out our tiki bingo at the Mai Kai. We also do other events from time to time as well, we will keep you posted when we have dates!

Where in California are you from? My husband and I are also transplants to Florida from Southern California.

With the last name starting with Mc, must be Downey. If he was a Bell, I'd say Southgate.

That's great! Looking forward to it.

I grew up in Whittier, but spent the last 8 years living up in San Jose. Where about's were you from?

Aloha and welcome to the port. Unfortunately, I have to miss Hukilau this year due to a family commitment, but I'm sure you'll have a great time. One way to track our local goings on is through facebook if you do that: http://www.facebook.com/fomgumbo/ . And anytime you decide to go the Mai Kai, you should say something. You never know when one or more of us are just looking for a reason to hit the Molokai. Actually, you always know, cause we're always looking for a reason to go the Mai Kai. Strike that we don't need a reason either. But I can't afford it every night. There is that.

I was born in Torrance, grew up in Oceanside, and before moving out here lived in my husbands home town Redlands.
