Mr. Mokantiki, 41

Looking for a little tiki fun and to meet new friends. I love long walks on the beach and dipping my toes in the...oh wait, this isn't the personals. Crap. This is the FOM!! And I'm looking to join if you'll have me!

I know some of you are going to ask the blatant and pressing questions of "how'd you get into tiki", "what makes you FOM material", "have you had that mole checked out by a doctor", etc., etc.

I've been seriously collecting tiki since about '98 when I got out of college and got a disposable income. And I do mean disposable because I spent a lot of time searching out tiki schwag in antique and thrift stores. Then eBay happened and it all went downhill from there. First experience with tiki probably had to be my parents showing off ephemera they had from Mainlander and Trader Vic's in St. Louis, along with trips to Disney and seeing the Enchanted Tiki Room and Polynesian Resort. Then when I attended a few Hukilaus in the mid 2000's it really clicked. Built a home bar, gave it a name (The Flora Lounge) and I became a degenerate basement tiki bar dweller. But I needed people to enjoy it with me, so I got on TikiCentral, sought out those near me and convinced them I was as crazy about tiki as they were and they should come over.

I hope I'm FOM material because I have a deep passion for the tiki lifestyle and have tried to cultivate the tiki culture here in KC and the region. I had the pleasure to meet with Vince Martini and Mr. Lucy Diamond Tiki at the TikiCat opening here in KC. They have joined a midwest tiki group on FB I started up called MOKANtiki (hence my pitiful attempt at a username) and I feel they got a good sense of the tiki fellowship we're trying to foster here. The soft opening party for TikiCat was specifically set up for members of our group after the owner saw just how passionate we were about the lifestyle.

I like both the serious side of tiki (the history, the roots of it and cultural impact over the decades) just as much as the fun side (attending events, meetups and private home gatherings). But I would like to get to know more people outside of just the local tiki crowd and because the FOM seems to easily facilitate that with a large membership spread out in many different communities. But yet from all my experience talking with members, it seems like a close knit family despite the distance between members.

Anyways, that's my intro and declaration of intent to join!

Thanks for reading and an official shout out and thanks to Vince Martini and Mr. LDT (and his wife!) for being so friendly and gracious when I was asking about the FOM, its members and everything in between!

Mahalo
Mr. Mokantiki

Crazy isn't it. He was a great advocate though and put me in touch with a lot of other members who were willing to answer questions.

Corey....great hanging with you Saturday night. May have partied too hard, I had to do extra work on Sunday to get all the rum out of my system.

Aloha, Corey...er, Mr. Mokantiki!!!

I'm excited to see Corey so excited about the FOM...so excited to see Corey? Anyway, he is good folk. Thanks to him, I have expanded the Ohana with several new friends in Kansas City!

Corey was gracious enough to allow me to crash in his downstairs tiki paradise. He introduced me to the Mokan tikis, and we had a blast opening TikiCat! This man is absolutely FOM material!!!

Corey, I still think about the Red X and get the giggles. I had such a great time hanging with you and the rest of the KC clan!

Thanks Mark, I had a blast hosting you! The Flora Lounge is open to you anytime!! I'm glad you made new friends through our group up here in KC and I feel the same after getting another chance to hang with FOM members like Brian and Caroline. Truly felt the aloha spirit!

Alooooooha, again!

It's been a while, so thought I'd stop by & say "Aloha' - though I would very much prefer to do that in person at TikiCat. Oh well - Aloha from afar is way better than no Aloha at all.

What's up in KC tiki land this time of year?
