Good evening everyone,

Related to our friend MySonsNameIsAlsoBort's topic about mixology resources, I was wondering if you'd be so kind as to post your favorite rums for drinking neat and mixing. As some of you may know, I am a beverage director and cellar master, but my area of expertise is at the moment primarily wine and bourbon. I am eager to expand my knowledge of rum, but it appears to be at least as complicated and nuanced a beverage as wine.

If any of you have any suggestions, I would be most appreciative.

Regards,

DS

For drinking neat, you can't go wrong with Zacapa, I really like Barbencort. It is an expansive world to delve into. Every country has something a little different to offer. I say try them all. :drunk:

Alooooha!

My current favorite for drinking neat in a Glencairn glass is Clement Martinique VSOP. Zapca and Angostura 1824 are nice as well.

As for mixing, it depends on if I'm tending to a large party or for myself and a couple of guests. My "well" is Cruzan as I think they hold up well in a mixed drink. Especially their Coconut Rum since they use real coconut and not that flavored crap like Malibu. That is a must for my Lei Lani Volcanos. If I'm mixing one of those up for my wife I use Clement Mahina Coco. Sure it's expensive to buy ($40 a fifth), but makes the Lei Lani Volcano just that much better.

Usual suspects for mixing at my home bar:
Mount Gay Eclipse
Cruzan White
Cruzan Amber
Meyers's Jamaican Dark
Smith Cross Navy Proof
Cana Brava
Lemonhart 151
Plantation 73% Overproof
Plantation Pineapple

and others....

My top sipping rum at the moment is Kaniche XO. Distilled in Barbados, aged twice - first in bourbon casks in Barbados, then shipped to France for a second aging in Cognac casks.

It is very smooth, very flavorful. Pretty much everything I like about Zacapa 23, and more - but for a lot less coin, if you have Total Wine & More in your area. ($27-$30)

Other great sippers:
Zacapa XO and Zacapa 23
Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva

Some of my go to mixing rums:
Coruba Dark
Doorla's XO
Diplomatico Anejo
Cruzan Light
Don Q Gold
Appleton (several)
El Dorado 5 (plus Coruba makes a great Mai Tai)
El Dorado Dark
Lemon Hart 151

My current sipping favorite is Diplomatico RE. Smooth and sugar-caney. Although the authentic Havana Club Anejo Reserva is growing on me (partner brought a lot back from Cuba)

For mixing, Cruzan White or Kohloa Dark, depending on the drink.

Edited this as it looks like my original comment wasn't added... But after I had read this I went to total wine and they were sampling the Kaniche XO, and it was good! Thank you for the recommendation.

Just returned from Mexico with a selection of Havana Club product. The 7 year was cheaper than the Reserva strangely. I tend to go for British style rum when sipping but I like the Reserva.

Side note: bringing it back legally reduces the thrill a bit.

Lately we have been sipping the Kirk and Sweeney. Stick to the 12. The 18 and 23 don't seem any better for the price.

The restaurant at which I work actually stocks the 18 and 23, and they're delightful. I'll have to go out and procure some of the 12 for myself. Thanks!
