Last night I put some of my recent ceramic work up for sale on e-Bay.
This morning two items were sold, but then I got this message someone.
I was very surprised that anyone would take offense at this.

From: umeone
To: dondrennan6vb0
Subject: Other: umeone sent a message about Hipster Kahiki Style Moai Salt Shaker #281905415975
Sent Date: Jan-10-16 09:28:15 PST

Dear dondrennan6vb0,

My family was one of the original owners of the Kahiki, and I find it disgusting that you are making a mockery of the Kahiki items. It's a Shame you can't make your own creations, rather than glue a bowl or cup to a Kahiki shaker. Nice move.

Here's my reply:

Dear umeone,

I was a fan of the Kahiki and I was very sorry to see it torn down. I wish it was still there.
The pieces I've made using the salt shaker as a base are not mockery, they are a tribute, inspired by the Kahiki. I wanted to make some items that never existed, but would fit right in with vintage mugs and bowls. I make them for other fans of the Kahiki and tiki bars in general. As you may know, tiki has had a huge resurgence in popularity.

Yes, this "Hipster" salt shaker was made in jest, but in no way did I mean to mock the Kahiki or anyone involved. It does make light of "hipster" hair and beard styles. I am sorry that you are offended. That was not my intention. I was merely having fun with the clay one day. This is the only one of it's kind.

Please accept my apologies.

Don Drennan

Offended? No.

I find your creation comical and "ironic".

Umeone I find to be a sad, angry person and I feel sorry for them.

They are disgusted with what you did... so what? Why do you care what they think?

They are certainly welcome to buy your item and then destroy it themselves if they truly think it a mockery.

Offended? Certainly not - I hang out with you guys; a high tolerance for BS is required, no?

I wonder if this is less a case of "I'm offended by your use of what my family once did" than "I wish I'd thought of it"

Thanks.

Anybody know who this Umeone is? Family of one of the original Kahiki owners?

Yes, she is. I forget how she is related.
She's on the green site. She shared her connection to the Kahiki over there years ago.
She has always been an unhappy angry person from her posts, etc. I have read over the years, so I'd say the anger is her baggage. Don't let her make it your baggage.

I would just ignore her.

People use the word hipster as a bad word. Just like they used greaser, beatnik, hippie, punk, it's better than a football jersey and pajamas. I don't see a thing wrong with being stylish.

I have always laughed at those who are clearly hipsters, yet deny their inclusion in that group. It's ironic.
This applies to many people who like tiki, many of whom also love PBR, have beards, listen to vinyl records, and loved things before they were cool.
I would not be offended if someone called me a hipster.

Q: Why did the hipster burn his tongue on his soup?

A: He ate it before it was cool.

Wow, what a deluded, repugnant individual. Don, few would have been able to muster so gracious a reply. Fewer still can hold a candle to your talents. Don't let the bastards grind you down!

On a lighter note, preach on, Bob6! LOL'd at the football jersey and pajamas comment. So true, so true. A>B; B>C; C>D ad infinitum, yet too many get stuck on A>B.

Ignore the haters. Keep doing what you are doing Don. I like them a lot. I am currently watching a few of your items on ebay trying to make my mind up.
