Like getting caught in the rain? and making love at midnight?

You went Rupert Holmes on me. Nice! I agree, that would be a memorable moment though. However, my thoughts actualy took me back to when I was with my family for dinner at O'hana in Disney. I enjoyed quite a few of these before dinner, missed my chair by about a half of foot when we went to get seated and landed on the floor. My whole table lost it and laughed as hard as me. Good times!

This came up around the fire pit at Voodoo Island last night... I didn't even blink.
For me, it's the Jet Pilot.
Hands down.

Buuuuut.... then again... I don't know if I could live in a world without bourbon.

Was I in that conversation around the fire pit Saturday night? I have a vague recollection of sitting BY the fire pit, but I don't know if I was lucid enough to join in any kind of meaningful dialogue.

That said, I have been on a Suffering Bastard kick lately. Seemingly I could drink those forever. However I said the same thing about Miller Genuine Draft back in college. (over self disclosure - again) The mint and the bitters make me very happy. The gin and brandy probably contribute to that emotion as well!

Recently I have been enjoying Menehune Juice a good bit. At Trader Vic's or at home it is a nice refreshing cocktail that I can't get enough of.

Jet Pilot or Ancient Mariner. Probably Jet Pilot if I had to choose.

Coquito would be my first choice, but almost anything with a heavy coconut flavor is a candidate. With my bad memory, I should probably devote a few months to organized taste-testing before settling on a definite answer.

Navy Grog made with the absolute freshest red grapefruit and limes as possible. Like.. Still sunwarm off the tree fresh.

Matusalem Gran Reserva
Local Ohio grade A maple syrup
1/4 oz of Amaro Meletti or maybe Zucca.. as well as one of Fernet Branca
Angostura bitters of course

Garnished with perfect mint grown wild in my yard and a fragrant slice of that lovely grapefruit

Yes, I could drink that forever and in any weather.

Hmmm, never tried it with Maple syrup. Sounds like a project for tonight.

Excellent idea, but I might have to put it off until the home bar build out that Oz and I have discussed in another thread is farther along. Much of my booze is in storage, and the bar is only intermittently in condition for serious cocktail assembling [when Notch and I are under orders to make it ready for my wife's parties]. Othertimes it is a cross between a construction site and a hoarder's storeroom.

Allow me to help:

Ahu's Navy Grog #2

2oz dark aged rum of your choice (Meyers's is fine.. Coruba is better.. Matusalem Gran Reserva is excellent)
3/4 oz fresh squeezed lime juice
3/4 oz grade A maple syrup (go local if possible)
3/4 oz red grapefruit juice (fresh is best, but Simply Grapefruit is perfectly fine)
1/4 oz Fernet Branca
2 heavy dashes Angostura bitters

Shake with cracked or cubed ice, strain over fresh ice in a double old fashioned. Garnish with fresh mint and an orange wheel or better yet, a grapefruit slice.

Enjoy!

Hrumph, I don't have Fernet Branca. It looks like a pretty complex taste profile, is there a substitute?

I don't know of any local maple syrups (local to South Florida that is) so I'll use a Grade A that I have from Vermont.

Hmm.. Good point. Local syrup if you reside in a locale that produces maple syrup. Vermont syrup rules, so hell yeah!

Fernet sub... Hmm... I have made them with various amaros.. Fernet is closest to a Kahiki NG..

Do you have any other amaros? Are there any available locally? You could try Cynar. I bet that'd work well. Maybe that and a dash of Fee's mint bitters?

Excellent!

So, same as above, but instead of 1/4 oz Fernet Branca, we go with 1/4 oz Cynar and a dash of Fee's mint bitters.

I think this might work!

But only if it's made by Mike.

If I have to make it: Jet Pilot/Painkiller.

If I was stuck on a desert island where I had to forage for my non rum ingredients, a Derby Daquiri.
