The FOM Kon-Tiki chapter invites you to "Call of the Tropics," a celebration of Tiki art, music and mid-century culture July 6-21 at the Color of Energy Gallery in Dayton, Ohio.

We're kicking it off on July 6 with a Friday night block party featuring the Nick Kizirnis Band, Crazy Joe and the Mad River Outlaws, Team Void, and Cherry Lee and the Daddy Katz. The last band features our very own HulaZombie on upright bass!

The opening party also includes artists, hot rods, vendors, fire dancers and a cash bar with tropical cocktails.

Our other events during the festival include a Jeff Chenault salon about Exotica music in Ohio and charity raffle to benefit SICSA.

Check out the Call of the Tropics web site for all the details.

We'll be announcing the artists, other performers and more surprises on the COTT Facebook page.

Please help spread the word and join us if you can! :fez:

Aloha! We have finalized most of the performers, events and sponsors for Call of the Tropics. We're still adding artists and working on cool stuff like a vintage-style Dayton Tropics T-shirt for the festival.

Here's the official press release. Please feel free to post it, share it or scream it from the palm trees.

For immediate release

"Call of the Tropics" festival celebrates Tiki art, music and Mid-Century culture
Kick-off event on July 6 features surf and rockabilly bands in Dayton's Oregon District

DAYTON, OHIO -- Dayton will play host to some of the top names in the Tiki art world at “Call of the Tropics,” a two-week festival of Tiki art, music and Mid-Century culture on July 6-21 at the Color of Energy Gallery in the city’s historic Oregon Arts District.

The Tiki art show features works by nationally known artists and carvers including Robb Hamel, Doug Horne, Derek Yaniger, “Tiki Tony” Murphy and Dave Hansen, among many others.

The festival also features some of the Dayton region’s best surf and rockabilly bands, a renowned Exotica music DJ, and a legendary Hawaiian singer-guitarist. In addition, several salon programs during the run of the show will feature guest speakers discussing Tiki culture.

All events are free and open to the public.

Call of the Tropics kicks off July 6 with the art show opening and a Tiki block party presented by Monster Energy Drink that features surf and rockabilly bands in downtown Dayton's Oregon Arts District.

The "First Friday" event rocks from 5 to 10 p.m. with live music by the Nick Kizirnis Band, Crazy Joe and the Mad River Outlaws, Team Void, and Cherry Lee and the Daddy Katz. Cruise the Oregon District to check out the hot rod displays, Tiki carvers, Mid-Century vendors, and street performers including fire dancers.

The art show opening at the Color of Energy Gallery will feature some of the exhibiting artists and a cash bar on the patio with tropical cocktails by Sidebar.

On July 14, music historian, writer and Exotica music DJ Jeff Chenault will talk about the history of Exotica music in Ohio, and then spin Exotica tracks in the Color of Energy's vintage vinyl shop, The Record Gallery.

The July 21 closing event will feature live music by Hawaiian singer-guitarist Francis Llacuna, and a talk by Judge Dan Gehres about Tiki culture in America. Gehres will highlight such golden-era Dayton Tiki landmarks as Georgie Rudin's The Tropics, the Kon-Tiki Theater and the Rhino Club.

Call of the Tropics features a charity raffle for artist collectibles to benefit SICSA (The Society for the Improvement of Conditions for Stray Animals), a Dayton nonprofit that has helped find homes for more than 50,000 homeless dogs and cats. Winners will be drawn on July 21 at the festival's closing event.

Call of the Tropics is produced by the Fraternal Order of Moai's Kon-Tiki chapter and celebrates the current revival of the Tiki culture of mid-20th century America. The festival is sponsored by Monster Energy Drink, Color of Energy Gallery, Oregon District Business Association, Led Sled Customs, Daddy Katz Kustom Kulture, Logos @ Work, Truth & Triumph Tattoo, Sidebar, and the Downtown Dayton Partnership.

The Color of Energy Gallery is located at 16 Brown Street, off East Fifth Street in Dayton's Oregon Arts District.

If you're coming from out of town for Call of the Tropics, we have a group rate available at the Dayton Crowne Plaza Hotel for the July 6 kick-off weekend. The hotel is walking distance from the Oregon District and Color of Energy Gallery. The group rate is a nearly $70 savings per night!

Go online to cpdayton.com, enter the reservation date, click on “Group Code” and enter TRO.

There also are several bed & breakfasts in the Oregon District, within an easy walk from the gallery. The tropical-themed one is already booked by a number of out-of-town FOM Fellows. (Go figure.) There were still rooms available at My Grandfather's Garden and Inn Port D'Vino.

Soul Fyre productions, an amazing fire performance troupe from Cincinnati, has been added to the Call of the Tropics "First Friday" kick-off party on July 6! Soul Fyre rocked the crowd at Festiki 2010. They once again will be performing in Polynesian costume for COTT!

You might remember Brian, of Soul Fyre, when he performed at HRHH4 out in the parking lot with Lucky the Painproof Man.

Call of the Tropics got a nice shout-out on the Tiki Talk blog!

We also will have pre-event coverage in both the Dayton Daily News and Dayton City Paper, the alternative weekly.

We've just added painter and sculptor Tom Taggart, best know for his covers to DC Comics' Batman and Swamp Thing, to the Call of the Tropics group show roster!

Like ... dig the crazy art that Derek Yaniger is donating for the Call of the Tropics charity raffle to benefit SICSA! It's an original color sketchbook drawing. Raffle tickets are $1 or six for $5, and will be available at all three COTT events.

Hi -

I've got business in Cleveland on the 12th and 15th.

Thinking of swinging down to Dayton on the 16th or 17th, on my way back to Chicago, to check out this show.
Wondering if the gallery is open on Mondays or Tuesdays?
Many galleries are closed early in the week.

Any good recommendations for a place to chow down afterwards, before I hit the road for Chicago?

Unfortunately, I won't be able to check out the opening/closing festivities; I'll be in Istanbul on opening night and New Orleans on closing night!

mauraru -
