I love the response to Tongariki! And, I’m a bit jealous... we need more tiki in Austin and more voices to make that happen!

It’s time to get off the beach...

I would like to become a Member of the FOM.

Ready-made meet-up spot in 4 Kahunas--and rumor has it that co-owner Chris (Kahuna CP) will provide unlimited free cocktails to all fellows.

Would you consider a joint chapter with Austin area / Houston area (Katy, Sugarland, West 'burbs)? Maybe you and yours and the Tropics Inspired Knights of Inebriation (TIKI Knights) could affiliate for quarterly libations.

Watch it, you! Haha.

A TX chapter (wherever it’s based) is definitely on my bucket list.

If the Queequeg in the Commonwealth of New England can pull off the distance between members, I am certain Texans can handle the stretch.

Keep in mind that Houston to Austin is about the same as Boston to Albany.
Houston to Dallas is about the same as Boston to Philly.
Houston to Amarillo is about the same as Boston to Detroit.

And Houston to El Paso is about the same as Boston to Chicago.

But I think, with a bit of dedication, an Austin/Houston chapter is do-able.

Actually we have a FOM member (paging Formikahini) in Houston & several FOM-interested in Houston as well. Austin will soon have it's own chapter & Houston has the makings of its own chapter, too, with some coordination. And once we have an Austin chapter, I think it might be time for a road trip to bring some FOM en masse to Houston for a FOM Meet & Greet, too! :fez: :fez: .....I can see it on the Horizon....!

If the New English can range the St Lawrence Seaway to the Potomac River (or the Hudson River for those narrow of mind), Texans can handle Houston to Austin.

Very cool to hear.
In the coming months, we'll likely host a meet & greet & will also be well-represented in Texas Tiki Week at the end of September. Have you checked out Texas Tiki Week in the past?

Welcome aboard from a newer initiate!

I'm sure you've heard, but Austin has a new tiki bar.

After an epically rocky start it seems like they're getting their ducks in a row.

MUCH caution on this place. They still need to makes things right. And they will still need to change up their drink menu & music significantly to bother thinking about it further.
& I still can’t figure out what the hell Sassy has to do with tiki
Their Target seems to be bros & hos.
Just ‘cuz you call yourself a tiki bar doesn’t make it true. Just sayin’....

Time will tell on this place

Yeah, from the people I've heard go there, the start was... unpleasant. The whole ripoff mug fiasco certainly didn't help things either.

But scrapping all their knockoff mugs and working with the actual tiki artists they knocked off originally seems like a step in the right direction.

I heard that the music there sucked, and the decor also looks like a "we saw what they did and would like some too", only done by people who
didn't really have a great grasp of what they were looking at.

As for the sassy part- you got me. Unless it's this
https://tenor.com/viOe.gif

Hopefully they'll get their act together. A rough start is better than no start. And you can never have too many tiki bars, even if they are sort of weak tea compared to
a really good tiki bar. Worst case scenario, maybe this one will act as an glue trap and keep the bros away from a future really good tiki bar that opens in Austin. ;)

Aloha David, Are you new to Austin? We’d love to know more about you. We just started our Austin chapter so hopefully we’ll have lots of opportunities in the future for meetups and activities. Have you been to any of the local tiki events?

David, Aloha and congratulations on finding you way to the port! I look forward to hearing from you on the boards and meeting you at Texas Tiki Week or sooner at a meet and greet.

Maybe, if. It was thoughtless and ignorant at best.

Is it wrong to want one of those horrible mugs? Horrible is being kind. They were something awful wrapped in a bad joke, left inside a flaming bag of poo. I wouldn't give anyone actual money for it though. Maybe Monopoly money. It's karmicly delicious.

I'm definitely not new to Austin. I moved here in the late 90s from the Dallas area. I've been following the saga of Lost Lei on the Texas Tikiphiles Facebook group. They seem to have made some serious waves in the community, but their target demographic likely won't mind. I have heard that Austin will get a new tiki bar sometime soon from the folks at Tatsuya who reportedly have a grasp of tiki culture.

I have heard of Texas Tiki Week, but I haven't participated in Austin because we didn't have a legit tiki bar. My favorite cocktail bar in town is Roosevelt Room, and they can make some very good tiki drinks. And my favorite tiki bar that I've been to is Porcos up in Cleveland. They're doing it right.

Please let me know about any meetups. I'd love get get to know y'all!

David

They were really, really awful. The mermaid especially. I made this little meme when everything exploded.
