The Islands of the Fraternal Order of Moai

I think there are many folks here that, like me, love mid-century modern design. I decided to start a thread where people can post their favorite retro modern designs. I decided to use the term "retro modern," rather than "mid-century modern" so that examples of art deco and 60s designs that are technically not mid-century modern can be included.

Oh, and bonus points of pictures of examples that you own.

I won a raffle last night at an industry lighting party, $100 off of a chandelier, too bad that doesn't really take a dent out of the $8000 price tag on that one! They also gave away an Arne Jacobson table lamp! Certainly need to go to more of these events! Maybe I can collect gift coupons till I can afford an enigma pendant light or something.

I was at Brimfield last week and saw an old table and chairs for lots a money that must have been the inspiration for this ikea product that I would have bought immediately except for the fact that my kitchen has no room for a table.


I'm sorry I didn't get a picture of the original or remember the name!

I'm obsessed with these MCM room divider screens from Crestview Doors, but there's tons of MCM decor and hardware to love on their site.

Kelly, those are awesome!!! I wonder if they make versions that will fit into where the pane panels normally fit on French doors? I would love to dress up some doors in the Hooper Lounge with some of these swank screens!

My wife found the glass and chrome coffee table on ebay. It is an original production from the late 50's and (incredibly) arrived in its original packaging. The celophane packaging had turned brown and was as hard as plastic. The only thing wrong with the table was that the ornamental discs bolt fittings were also dry and cracked easily. But, the table looks fine without the discs, so no big whoop.

My personal pride and joy are the two round Eileen gray E1027 tables (also known as Gray's Cantilever Table) that I got for a steal!

Biggest claim to shame: I had an opportunity to purchase two Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Barcelona chairs, original to the lobby of 860-880 Lakeshore Drive, Mies van der Rohe's twin tower apartment buildings in Chicago. These two chairs were beat up and needed major repairs. They were "pick-up" only and Rootie would not let me drive to Chicago and claim these treasures. DAMN IT!!! I hope they went to a good home!

Our local post office was built in 1963 and I'm confident that many folks here would love it. Captain Quad calls our county offices "Westworld," because they're so MCM and I adore them. However, most everyone who lives here hates these buildings, thinks they're eyesores. There's been a big movement to demolish them, which I fear may have gained steam due to flooding from Irene.

Here's our living room - I also posted it a while back, but this is a good spot for it

Most of this came from an assortment of Estate Sales (couches, chair), Thrift Stores (lamp, lampshade, hanging ashtray), ebay (boomerang table, witco stuff), vintage stores (floor lamp, mosaic wall hanging), flea markets, etc.....

But that is when cats make the biggest mess. Those are well kept homes.

Any thoughts on table lamps? What is a source for the tall drum shades these days? They are around 16" diameter and 25" tall.

I've been doing a little upgrading and I'm pretty pleased with this section of our living room:



Captain Quad just built himself an electronics workbench in the basement and will be using it to rehabilitate some of the vintage hi-fi equipment and appliances we've been collecting, so I look forward to being able to use those soon(ish).
