She may well be taking the final final bow of celebrity deaths of 2008.

She will be missed.

My last (and by far, my favorite) apartment in West Hollywood, CA on West Harper Ave in the Casa Real. It was built in 1931 as a "sister" building to the beautiful and famed Chateau Marmont, just up Sunset Blvd. I was told that at times, the building was used for overflow from the Chateau. Plenty of celebrities lived on Harper through the years, but my particular studio apartment was once the home of Ms. Eartha Kitt.

I rescued an old full sized Murphy bed from the boiler room in the basement/laundry...it was made of iron, and although very heavy, fit perfectly into the Murphy closet. I loved that building, and studio...my favorite thing was to drink my coffee in the morning with the French doors open, smelling the honeysuckle off the courtyard below...gazing over the Spanish tiled roof next door. The elevator had the original wood sliding door on tracks, buttons and jolted all the way up and down. Guests were never comfortable using it, but I loved to. The interior lobby was art deco, lovely stair railings, gold mouldings, bricked & tiled mediterranean (sp?) exterior, with giant urns flanking the steps in front.

We were on rent control at that time, and there was a waiting list to get in. Some of the older tenants left their tenancy in their wills. My neighbors were eclectic and fascinating...some I am still in touch with, others I often wonder what became of them. One was an actor and friend of Warhol, complete with original screens from the master himself...another a songwriter ini the 60s, who lived off his royalties from number one hits...a rockband that made it big in the 90s...a literary poet who lived in seclusion amongst nothing but hoarded books (he and I still correspond) he always intrigued me and was so brilliant. I used to wonder what it was like when Ms. Kitt lived there. I bet it was a showplace! If the walls could talk!

Around the corner at Crescent Heights, was the site of the Garden of Allah Hotel and Villa. Some of the most scandulous affairs of the Golden Years, happened in this enclave. It is now a Bank/shopping plaza with a McDonalds. How sad! I LOVE old Hollywood, and miss it whenever I think of my memories in L.A.

So happy to see this now preserved as the Harper Ave Historic District. It broke my heart to leave after the '94 quake...but that was my destiny.

That is truly sad to hear. She was a talent. As bad as a movie Boomerang was, her scenes were hilarious. Marcus.

This year just sucks for deaths.

Chip and I saw Ms. Kitt in concert in Palm Beach 2 years ago. I Want To Be Evil was spectacular. Actually the whole show was terrific.

Dang it!

I forgot to say "aloud":

God Bless You Ms. Kitt...I was always a fan. My posting above drifted a bit, but I felt such a kinship living in her apartment...It thrilled me to no end to imagine her living there too :0)
