Russ was a Physician’s Assistant in the Merrimack small family practice where I was the only lab tech. He used to say that being a PA was all the fun of being a doctor but without all the hassle. Russ was tall and had a big, round belly that shook when he laughed. You could hear his laugh clear across the clinic and you had no option but to laugh as well; it was infectious. I was pregnant when I started working there and it amused him to no end that I was as round as I was tall when I was at the end of my pregnancy. He used to keep party supplies in his desk drawer so whenever we were having a rough day, he would set up a little tiki bar at the printer station across from his office and would mix us non-alcoholic drinks; usually it was just pineapple juice or vegetable juice with hot sauce. I was 2 weeks from my due date and he told me to induce labor to eat at a specific Chinese restaurant (a long standing local myth that I’m certain helps this restaurant’s business; It didn’t work, Maks waited until his due date).

Russ was noted for his friendship with author Stephen King. If you Google search Russ Dorr Stephen King, you will find a handful of articles and a couple interviews about how he does Stephen’s medical research. If you look in the “Thank You” or “Acknowledgements” of any of his books (aside from Carrie as they met as it was just published) you will find his name. I once asked Russ about how I had heard a rumor about a kind of sequel to The Shining and he said to me “Can you keep a secret?” and I said “NO!” and he replied “Well I wasn’t going to tell you anyway!” and laughed his big, infectious laugh. That’s what I am going to miss the most, his laugh.

He retired from medical practice about 5 years ago, but would still stop in to say Hello and make our day that much brighter.
