Maya Angelou, the memoirist and poet whose landmark book of 1969, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” — which describes in lyrical, unsparing prose her childhood in the Jim Crow South — was among the first autobiographies by a 20th-century black woman to reach a wide general readership, died on Wednesday in her home. She was 86 and lived in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Her death was confirmed by her longtime literary agent, Helen Brann. No immediate cause of death had been determined, but Ms. Brann said Ms. Angelou had been in frail health for some time and had had heart problems.

"choke"….Bargoyle! I hadn't ever seen that one but that was funny. :)

I admire her greatly and saw her speak just a little over two years ago here in Nashville.

She said some very poignant things that sank right to the depth of my being about not letting the past define who you are now and to become in your future and not letting your own self sink you.

It was the impetus to push my own self forward to listening to my heart and standing up for what I need in life.

Thats a battle still raging but I'm well on my way internally, and that truly is in gratitude to this ladies very personal words spoken and shared.

Rest in Peace Maya Angelou. You are a true survivor.
