I got to meet him once while on a family vacation to Cocoa Beach. He seemed like a nice guy. Wow.

(I kinda laughed at the last line of the story)

It happened today — one of Brevard’s most beloved, colorful and talented artists, Wayne Coombs, died.

Becky Coombs, his wife of 35 years, believes he died of a heart attack. Wayne, owner of Mai Tiki in Cocoa Beach, was a larger than life presence in Brevard’s cultural, surfing and tiki scene. His huge laugh and ready smile were shadowed only by his towering stature.

In addition to some of the best tiki art you’ll find, Coombs was also responsible for a provocative exhibition of art made from Cuban rafts that had washed ashore onto Brevard beaches.

Most recently, he worked to line public places with his towering tikis. They can be seen guiding beachgoers to the beach at the end of Minutemen Causeway in Cocoa Beach. They line walkways at the International Palms Resort in Cocoa Beach.

You just cannot go anywhere in Brevard without seeing his presence.

Indeed, his work became iconic during his lifetime. No doubt they will continue to resonate with his skill, his talent and his full of life personality. That’s something devoutly to be wished by any artist.

Look for a story about Wayne tomorrow in FLORIDA TODAY.

Sometimes it's dark and stormy in my porthole.
