One of the most memorable character actors of film and television.
Marty, Lt. Commander Quinton McHale, Boris Vaslov, Rogo, Shack, Santini, and Mermaid Man to name just a very, very few of his terrific roles.

Love this story about him and this restaurant...

Earnest Borgnine and Andy Griffith in the same week. Bummer! They both had long lives and successful careers though. We should all be so lucky!

A great actor and, by all accounts, a great human being. I loved the support parts he would play like the cab driver in Escape From New York and many others.

Probably one of his lesser known gigs, Borgnine co-starred with Soupy Sales on an un-aired pilot for "The Soupy Sales Hour." This shows up on DVDs sold by various public domain TV show websites. Hardly his finest work, but a pretty odd couple, worth a look by fans of either or both stars. More of a Broadway show tribute than comedy - with Judy Garland also.

Oh this is sad. Gardner and I have themed movie nights where we choose an actor, rent 2 of their films and cook dinner and make drinks based around the theme of the movies. We did Ernest Borgnine night a couple years ago. We were not able to get "The Wild Bunch" (instead we watched an episode of MST3K called Merlin's Magical Shop or something like that). But it was a good night even though our intended theme of Western, Chili and beer got kind of shot to hell.

When recently (during a book tour) asked what his secret to a long and healthy life was, EB replied "I masturbate a lot". Gotta love the guy. :)
In film, I think his most enduring role aside from Marty, has to be Fatso Judson in From Here To Eternity. One of the best movie villans of all time in my opinion.

RIP to a very talented and diverse actor.

And Commander McHale could really rock an Aloha shirt:

Last year in Atlanta, as shady as it sounds, I met him in the men's room at Trader Vic's. Before I peed. Nice guy. No pics. True story.
