Anne Francis, a sweet-voiced honey blonde who starred as a sexy Jane Bond-type detective on TV's Honey West in the mid-'60s and was a CinemaScope eyeful in the '50s sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet, died Sunday of complications of pancreatic cancer at a retirement home in Santa Barbara, Calif., the Los Angeles Times reports. She was 80.

With a distinctive beauty mark below her lower right lip, Francis, though never a top-ranking star, always had her devoted cult followers. Among her better-known movies were Bad Day at Black Rock, Blackboard Jungle, Don't Go Near the Water and Funny Girl, though in that last picture she claimed her best scenes ended up on the cutting-room floor. She played a Ziegfeld Girl gal pal of headliner Fanny Brice, played by Barbra Streisand.

In Forbidden Planet Francis was Altaira, the daughter of the space scientist played by Walter Pidgeon."I got that part because I was under contract to MGM and I had good legs," Francis later said. Her love interest in the movie was a handsome young Leslie Nielsen, who died in November.

A native of Ossining, N.Y., the former child actress went to Hollywood and signed contracts with the studios in the '40s, but her career finaly took hold in the next decade thanks to live-TV productions. She is survived by two daughters and a grandson.

That's weird timing - I was just watching "Forbidden Planet" last night. She was awesome as Honey West, too.

And a couple of classic Twilight Zones and as a guest star on countless top shows, even up to just a very few years ago. So sad to hear she's gone...

I guess we are working on a new Hollywood trifecta with the recent passing of Pete Postlethwaite, a terrific character actor.

My local TV station just brought back the old Honey West series out of the moth balls. Great show.
Anne was a very 60's sexy type actress, without having to play dumb dame roles. I really admired her.

She 'guest starred' on a lot of 70's cop dramas. She was always so classy and glamorous. I never realized she wasn't an 'A' list actress..she was in so many things.

RIP Anne...you will be missed.

There were two episodes of "Honey West" that Anne Francis appeared with Tikis:

1. Episode 10 - "A Neat Little Package". Honey goes undercover as a cocktail waitress in a Chinese-style Tiki restaurant. There's a fight scene in an office with lots of Tikis (one get a machete chop in the head). I think they used the Gilligan's Island lagoon as the back of the restaurant.

2. Episode 12 - "A Million Bucks in Anybody's Language". Honey goes undercover as car-hop waitress in a Jungle-style drive-in (with at least one Tiki). She wears a sexy tiger-print outfit.

Also I love Episode 3, "The Abominable Snowman" that begins with her at the iconic Griffith Park Observatory.

Anne Francis will live FOREVER as a cult icon of both the late 50's and mid 60's !!
