Rod Hula Hop II

August 18-19, 2006
The Fraternal Order of Moai (FOM) and the Columbus Drifters celebrated
their second annual Hot Rod Hula Hop in grand style. Sponsored by Tiki
Magazine, the event was a full weekend of hot rods, music and tiki’s.
On Friday night the party started with a huge crowd of artists, writers,
tiki enthusiasts and hot rodders from all over the Midwest. Over 100
people in all crammed into the Tropical Bistro for the “Feast
of the Tiki Gods.” The Tropical Bistro is a new Pan Asian restaurant
that recently opened up in Hilliard that brings the true spirit of Aloha
back to Ohio. The owners Theang Ngo and Soeng Thong have furnished the
restaurant with tables (as well as masks and other memorabilia) that
originally graced the inside of the Kahiki. They serve the same food
and drink menu as the Kahiki as well, but updated it a bit to fit in
more with the times. If you want a Smoking Eruption to go along with
your Tahitian Mermaid, they will be most happy to oblige. This night
however, they served up a very special buffet style luau complete with
roast suckling pig. Throw in a bountiful supply of tropical side dishes
and you have a true “Feast of the Tiki Gods.” Cocktails
were served by former Kahiki bartender Jim Carasco. Providing the beautiful
background music for the evening was Hawaiian-born Francis Llacuna on
slack-key guitar. The HRHH couldn’t have started any better!
Saturday was amazing! The main event was held at a really cool bar in
Dublin, Ohio called “Largo’s Tavern.” Organized by
the Columbus Drifter’s, vintage and kustom rods from all over
the Midwest packed the large parking lot in front of Largo’s.
An eclectic mix of Hot Rod, Rockabilly, Surf, Lounge and Exotica music
permeated the area by DJ Kid Mongo, DJ Trader Jeff and HiFi Hijinx.
Incredible food was served by resident FOM chef Dimethios. Vendors included
Tiki Magazine from San Diego, Otto’s Shrunken Head from New York
and local carver Jim Robinson’s Exotica Arts from Columbus. Jim
also carved the special Tiki trophies that were given to the best cars
in each category. A custom made Tiki Mug was designed specifically for
the event by FOM member Senpai Lee.
After the car show, the stage was set for a monster grand finale. A
stellar line-up of bands interspersed with titillating performances
by the Barnyard Burlesque troupe. The bands included The Madeira, The
Crimson Ghosts, Fisherman, The Cryptokats and Knuckel Drager. Each performed
their own style of monster rock and surf tunes with a dash of Exotica
thrown in for good measure. The Barnyard Burlesque featured savage amazons,
lovely native girls and sirens that no mortal man could resist.
It all came together beautifully and one thing is certain—the
Ohio Ohana know how to throw a party!
